Designing a Forever Home [Little Details Make A Big Impact]

This beautiful Charlotte home was recently built by Arcadia Homes, honored as the 2020 Custom Home Builder of the Year by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Custom Home Builders Committee. Our clients purchased the home in spring 2021, and were referred to us by the fabulous Kim Trouten.

The home had great bones and beautiful custom features, including built-ins, statement lighting, lots of windows for natural light, as well as existing furniture the client brought when they moved in. But there were updates necessary to suit our client’s personal style and serve the needs of their busy family.

Even with a great foundation, there was a lot of work that went into designing this living room. We encouraged our client to keep the sofa, knowing that we could work it in to the space – plus, with lead times for new furniture still being pretty crazy, it just made sense! I am usually a big proponent of beautiful faux greenery, because, well, life is busy, but the plants used in this particular space are actually real – how awesome is that? Our client has a green thumb, and had these beautiful orchids and potted greenery we were able to utilize in this room with so much natural light.

This was a full-service project, even with the existing furnishings and features. We have the same process with each client, and treat each space individually; believe it or not, sometimes it can actually be more challenging when you are working with existing features and furnishings rather than starting from scratch. But we love a good challenge, and sourced this beautiful coffee table, rug, chairs, and huge beautiful custom gold-leaf wall art pieces (seriously, how stunning is this wall art?!)

Another one of our favorite features of this home was the lounge on the first floor.

This room is an entire mood. The black on black on black is balanced by the white decor in the bookshelves and black-and-white patterned rug. I also love the juxtaposition of the dark, moody lounge against the white walls through the arched doorway. The tall windows let in plenty of light, another reason the dark walls and built-ins work here. We styled the tabletops and bookshelves and also added a stunning console under the gold Samsung “Frame” TV for a layered and complete look.

We totally transformed the bonus room! What started out as pink, pink, and more pink:

BEFORE

BEFORE

Got a modern makeover that was better suited for our client’s personal style!

AFTER – what an update!

Updated paint colors and lighting made a huge difference in this bonus room, as well as modifying the built-in for more of a “theater” look and feel. We also incorporated some of our favorite design tricks for luxe, but family-friendly living. A sofa table with stools tucked under (AKA: the SLB signature Sofa Bar) provides a space for having snacks while watching a movie (don’t you love the fun popcorn maker?) and performance fabrics protect this light colored sofa from kids and pets. YES, you can have light colored furniture when you have a busy family with little ones and four-legged family members!

There is so much more to share from this home update! Stay tuned for the big reveal of the other living spaces we’ve been working on in this home.
